First hearing in the investigation

Today began the first testimonies of the investigation into the alleged attempt by President Bolsonaro to politically interfere in the Federal Police (PF), following accusations from former Cabinet Minister Sergio Moro. The hearing of Mauricio Valeixo, the previous director of the PF,​ in Curitiba (PR) lasted for more than five hours. Although Moro’s testimony did not contain a lot of new information, Valeixo’s testimony has been awaited with anticipation.

Although the press is exploring these statements in order to find evidence that the president committed a crime, there will be more noise than concrete facts. From the point of view of popularity, the first testimonies – Valeixo, Ramagem and Saadi – should not affect Bolsonaro’s approval ratings. In addition to the media impact caused by the departure of Sergio Moro, which has already reached its peak, issues such as concern about the coronavirus pandemic and the economy surpass the perceived importance of the Bolsonaro versus Moro political dispute.
