Former German Chancellor resigns from board of Rosneft

On May 20 Gerhard Schroeder resigned from the board of the Russian state oil major. He had been under severe pressure from Germany to do so. On May 18 the EU Parliament threatened sanctions against him if he did not resign. He was said to have a close relationship with Putin. Schroeder has state-funded office space in the EU Parliament, and this was going to be lost if he did not resign. Five foreign vice president have left Rosneft since February 2022. Putin was in East Germany with the KGB and speaks German. Germany had a better relationship with Russia than most other EU countries until very recently. Schroeder was also chairman of the shareholders' committee of the company building Nord Stream 2.Matthias Warnig, the CEO of the mothballed Nord Stream 2 project, also resigned. Warnig was an officer in the East German intelligence service in the 1980s.
