France and Germany keen to end Ukraine War

On May 28 the President of France and the Chancellor of Germany had a phone call with Putin. They forwarded proposals to end the war. France and Germany pleaded with Russia to guarantee safe passage to ships transporting food from the Ukrainian Port of Odessa. Ukraine provides at least 10% of the world's grain. Countries such as Ethiopia, Egypt and Bangladesh are heavily dependent on Ukraine as a food source. Moscow said it is willing to promise safe passage to ships exporting food from Ukraine in return for sanctions on Russia being eased. Combined, Russia and Ukraine produce 30% of the world's wheat. Ukraine mined Odessa harbor. It could de-mine it to allow shipping but this could take weeks. The Ukrainians are worried that if they clear the mines the Russian Navy might sail in. Putin warned Western countries not to furnish Ukraine with more weapons. The harvest should begin in July. But this year little of it will be collected, and very little will be transported out unless an agreement is made about shipping.
