Gazprom to cut deliveries to EU dramatically

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 26 Jul 2022 by Alex Teddy

On July 26 the Russian gas giant announced that it will reduce supplies via Nord Stream to 33 million cubic meters per day. That is 20% of capacity. Gazprom says this is due to technical problems. The cut will take effect from 0700 Moscow time on July 27. Earlier in July 2022 Gazprom cut gas supplies for 10 days of maintenance. However, only 40% of capacity was restored.  Germany buys more of its gas from Germany than any other country. Berlin said that Gazprom was misusing gas to punish Germany for helping Ukraine.  Gazprom said the reduction in capacity was because a turbine was being repaired in Canada. Gazprom cited bureaucracy arising from EU sanctions as a reason for the turbine's return being delayed. The EU has anticipated a total shutdown of Russian energy sales to it. The EU has a contingency plan and could mandate a 15% gas usage cut in all member states. This would strain economies. Some EU countries such as Hungary are minded to reach an accommodation with Russia.
