Georgia and Russia normalize flights and visas

On May 10 Russia said that Georgians will be allowed to enter the country for 90 days without a visa. Flights between the countries will be resumed for the first time since 2019. They were ended due to anti-Russian demonstrations in Georgia. Tens of thousands of Russians are in Georgia to avoid conscription. This has been a boost to a country, which has only 5 million people. Georgia is trading normally with Russia. Curiously, relations between Russia and this former Soviet republic have improved during the war. 80% of Georgians want to join the EU. But in 2022 the EU declined to give the country candidate status. Russian troops are in the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia says they are peacekeepers while Georgia says they are occupiers. The current Georgian government is friendlier with Russian than previous administrations were. Mikhail Saakashvili, the former President of Georgia, is in jail on a hunger strike. He was seen as anti-Russian. He later became a Ukrainian citizen and a regional governor in Ukraine.
