Georgia bans export of US cars to Russia

On August 2 Georgia made the announcement. It had already banned the re-export of EU cars to Russia in July 2023. Georgia presumably fears secondary sanctions if it does not do this. From January to July 2023 Georgia sold 3,786 cars to Russia worth USD 52 million. The Russian elite prefers to drive cars manufactured in Germany, Sweden, France, Italy, the UK, US or South Korea. Western sanctions have been very leaky. Russian companies have simply ordered an item from a compliant former Soviet country or Turkey or the UAE. The company in the third country then orders the item from a sanctioning country like the US and then resells it to the Russian company.Â
