Georgia benefits from Russian immigration

In 2022 Georgia's banks received over USD 2 billion in transfers from Russia. Over 112,000 Russians moved to the country. Most were men aged 18-35. But some were older men, women and children. The influx of Russians has boosted the economy 10%. Some of the immigrants are anti-war liberals. But there are pro-war Russians there: they simply do not want to do the fighting themselves. A few thousand Belarusians have also moved in. Some Ukrainian refugees have also moved to Russia. Georgian public aid for them has run out. The arrival of 150,000 immigrants is significant in a country of only 5 million people. Georgia has a bad relationship with Russia because of disputed territories: South Ossetia and Abkhazia. But Georgia has been relatively quiet on the Ukraine War. Georgia is trading normally with Russia. Ex-President Saakashvili is incarcerated but held in a hospital due to an illness and his hunger strike. Georgia is not releasing him despite international pleas to do so. Saakashvili is Russia's main enemy in Georgia. To free him would irk Moscow. Saakashvili has been a Ukrainian citizen since 2013. Ukraine has appealed for his release but not too vociferously. That is because was an ally of Zelensky's predecessor, Petro Poroshenko.
