Georgia drops controversial legislation

On March 10 the foreign agent bill was defeated. The proposed legislation caused massive protests. It had been compared to Russian legislation that obliged those who receive foreign funding to comply with onerous registration regulations. The police had trouble containing protestors against the bill on March 7 and 8. Russia accused the US of causing russophobia in Georgia. Putin's spokesman said that the Georgian President was speaking for the United States. Opposition parties say they will carry on demonstrating despite the bill being dropped. They wanted to ensure that Georgia joins the EU, which 80% of people want. The ruling Georgian Dream Party is also committed to this, but some doubt its sincerity.
