Georgian Dream wants to impeach the president

On September 7 the EU asked Georgia to reduce polarization. Georgia applied for EU candidate membership but it might be rejected because of its fraught politics. The decision will be made in October 2023. On September 1 the ruling Georgian Dream Party said it wanted to impeach the president. Georgian Dream suspects the president of supporting the opposition. Georgian Dream does not have a sufficient majority to impeach the president. The opposition are ardently pro-EU. Georgian Dream has become friendlier with Russia since 2022. But they say they want to join the EU too. President Zurabishvili is touring the EU. She was born in France to Georgian parents and is a dual citizen of the two countries. She is required by the constitution to seek permission from the cabinet for political activities. Permission was declined but she has gone anyway. She is passionately pro-EU and pro-Ukraine. The EU said that Georgia must make tangible progress on de-oligarchization and corruption before becoming a candidate.
