Georgia's Supreme Court allows impeachment of President

On October 16 it was ruled that Georgia's president, Salome Zurabashvili, violated the constitution by traveling abroad without the permission of Parliament. In September 2023 the ruling party, Georgian Dream, announced its intention to remove the president from office. Parliament can now vote to impeach her. Georgian Dream has 84 seats but needs at least 100 votes to depose the president lawfully. It is doubtful that enough deputies from other parties will vote for impeachment for this to happen. Salome Zurabashvili is a French-Georgian. She is an outspoken advocate of EU membership. Georgia was rejected for EU candidate membership in 2022. However, the EU supremo Charles Michel visited in 2023 to assure Georgia that EU candidacy is still possible. The EU insists on major reforms before this. President Zurabashvili has been publicly scathing towards the Georgian Dream for not delivering on these reforms. The Prime Minister is friendlier towards Russia than any PM since 2004. He is from the Georgian Dream Party.
