Georgian breakaway region leases land to Russia

On December 27 the President of Abkhazia signed a law that transferred a Black Sea resort to Russia for 49 years. Abkhazia is recognized as an independent country by Russia. However, the international community recognizes it as Georgian territory. The Abkhazian parliament passed the law during an overnight debate. Some Abkhazians are openly protesting the deal. Georgia said the land transfer is illegal. It considers Abkhazia to be illegally occupied by Russia. Moscow insists that Russian troops there are peacekeepers. The Abkhazians are an ethnic group with their own language who seceded from Georgia in 1991. Relations between Georgia and Russia improved in 2023. Flights between the two countries were restored. They had been suspended in 2018 over a diplomatic row. This land transfer dispute will damage relations. Georgia has benefited financially from the influx of hundreds of thousands of Russians and Ukrainians who want to avoid the war. Georgia aspires to join the EU but there are some Georgians who are pro-Moscow.
