Georgian Parliament decides not to remove president

On October 19 the impeachment vote was held. As we predicted, President Zurabashvili survived. The ruling party (Georgian Dream) had wanted her removed from office for allegedly breaching the constitution. The motion secured 86 out of 150 votes but required 100 to pass. However, the motion might succeed in the future. The president is resolutely europhile and pro-NATO. Georgian Dream is more sympathetic to Moscow than any administration since the "color revolution" of 2004. Russophilia in Georgia took a knock in October 2023 when Russia said it would open a naval base in Abkhazia. This is internationally recognized as a breakaway region of Georgia. But Moscow claims it is an independent country.Â
