Georgian PM resigns

On January 19 Irakli Garibashvili made his announcement. This was his second term as PM. It is thought that Irakli Kobakhidze will become prime minister. He is chairman of the Georgian Dream Party, to which Garibashvili also belongs. The constitution requires that the new prime minister must submit a list of the cabinet for parliament's approval within 2 weeks. The European Union is worried that democracy has been degraded in Georgia by the Georgian Dream Party. Georgia aspires to join the EU but was refused candidate member status. Georgia has also been cosier with Russia since the Ukraine War. In 2023 Georgia and Russia restored direct flights which had been banned by Russia in 2018 due to a diplomatic row. Georgia has benefitted from an influx of Russians keen to avoid involvement in the Ukraine War. The government is also still trying to pass a foreign agents bill which is reminiscent of repressive Russian legislation. Anti-Russian sentiment in Georgia is not uncommon. ''Russians go home'' graffiti is widespread. Russia and Georgia dispute two regions—South Ossetia and Abkhazia which Russia recognizes as independent nations. Parliamentary elections are due in October 2024. Georgian Dream looks likely to win due to a buoyant economy with 7.6% GDP growth.
