Georgians protest against foreign agents' bill

On April 17 thousands of people demonstrated near parliament. They want the government to drop the foreign agents' bill. Western governments and Georgians civil society have said that it will have a chilling effect on dissidents and human rights. Critics say the bill is based on its Russian equivalent. Under the bill organizations with foreign funding would have to register and provide their accounts to the authorities. The EU has said if the bill becomes law it will jeopardize Georgia's application to be an EU candidate member.  83 legislators voted for the bill and none against it at the first reading. The governing party Georgian Dream is behind the bill. The bill has been mooted since 2023. The bill is due to be debated for the final time on May 17. However, it requires the president's signature to pass. President Zurabashvili has said she will veto it, which is her constitutional prerogative. Parliament cannot override her veto by using its supermajority.
