Germany adopts less belligerent tone towards Russia as US evacuates diplomats from Ukraine

On January 20 the head of the German Navy was fired for saying Russia will not attack Ukraine. He also said all Russia wanted and deserved was respect. Ukraine expressed its dismay and said the admiral was like a Nazi occupier.Germany has lobbied against cutting Russia off from the SWIFT system. Berlin now seems to want Nord Stream 2 to operate even if there is a war in Ukraine.Berlin refuses to send arms to Ukraine arguing that this would inflame the situation. The US and UK are shipping more weapons to Ukraine. Baltic NATO countries have been authorized to provide weapons to Ukraine in the event of war.The United States and UK have removed some of their non-essential diplomats and diplomatic dependents from Kyiv. The US has advised Americans in Ukraine to depart. Ukraine described this as over hasty.The Dutch and Germans are mulling withdrawing non-essential diplomats from Ukraine. The EU Mission does not plan to do so.Moscow said the withdrawal of some Western diplomats from Ukraine hints at aggressive Western action in the country.The United States urged Americans not to travel to Russia because they might face harassment. NATO has been moving more troops and equipment to Eastern Europe.
