Government Suspends Activities at the Romero Mining Project

Responding to social pressure in the province of San Juan de la Maguana against the development of the Romero mining project, President Luis Abinader decided on May 4 to suspend all activities related to the initiative. The project has been promoted by the Canadian mining company GoldQuest Mining Corp. under gold, silver, zinc, and copper exploration concessions granted since 2005. San Juan de la Maguana, a province whose economy is primarily based on agriculture, has opposed the project's development due to concerns about its potential negative effects on local water sources. The project was in the environmental assessment phase. The decision had negative repercussions on the stock prices of several Canadian mining companies operating in the Dominican Republic on May 5, 2026, including GoldQuest Mining Corp., Unigold Inc., and Precipitate Gold Corp.
