The government is working on social assistance

BRAZIL POLITICS - Report 09 Jun 2020 by Murillo de Aragão and Cristiano Noronha

The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, confirmed today that the government will extend the payment of emergency aid for informal workers for another two months. However, Guedes has not yet revealed what the installment will be. In previous instances, President Jair Bolsonaro had spoken of R$ 300.

At today´s meeting, Paulo Guedes also announced that “Renda Brasil” will soon be launched. It is a basic income project that will bring together various social programs, including Bolsa Família.

The debate over the amount of emergency aid may lead to differences between the government and the National Congress. It is worth remembering that last week, the President of the House of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), defended the need for the amount of R$ 600 to be extended for another 60 days.

While some divergences may occur, the announcement made today by Paulo Guedes is positive news and could create social comfort for the most disadvantaged sections of the population, especially informal workers and those who are unemployed, which may bring political dividends for Jair Bolsonaro.
