Growing protests in Russian ethnic minority region

Protests in Bashkortostan started on January 17 when a peace and environmental activist was sentenced to 4 years in jail for extremism. Hundreds of young men pelted the police with snowballs.  Protests started in a small city but on January 19 spread to the regional capital, Ufa. 1,500 people demonstrated. They asked for the head of the region to resign. The regional government has blocked social messaging apps to prevent the opposition from coordinating and disseminating its messages.  Hundreds of people have been arrested and charged with rioting. There is a heavy police presence in public squares. The regional authorities say that the demonstrators want Bashkir independence which is forbidden by the Russian Constitution. They accused Ukrainian intelligence of fomenting the trouble. For several years there have been demonstrations in Bashkortostan against environmentally degrading mining practices.
