Half of Russian air traffic controllers not working

On August 17 the Russian newspaper Vedomosti reported that almost 50% of the air traffic controllers in the country have been laid off or are furloughed. There has been severe shrinkage in Russian aviation. In February 2022 the EU and several other countries banned Russian and Belarusian airlines from flying over their airspace. Russia and Belarus responded in kind. Russia used to make money from overflight fees. The State Air Traffic Management Corporation has laid off 2,000 employees, including 600 air traffic controllers, since February 2022. A further 20% of workers have been put on leave. Civilian nuclear airports close to Ukraine have been closed. A Russian cabinet minister said that the aviation industry could continue for 5 years. Many planes are not being used due to the precipitous fall in passenger numbers. Unused planes are being cannibalized for spare parts. Most Russian civilian aircraft are Western made. Russia cannot obtain repairs or spares for these planes. Air traffic controllers have asked Putin for financial support.
