Holland sues Russia over MH17

On July 10 the Netherlands filed a case against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights. Russia is a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights and is subject to the jurisdiction of the court.The Dutch alleged that the Malaysia Airlines flight was shot down over Ukraine in 2013 by pro-Moscow militias who had been armed by Russia. The passenger plane was brought down by a Russian manufactured Buk missile. No one disputes that part.Russia denies any involvement in the downing of the plane and said that the legal case will damage relations. Five countries' police forces investigated the plane's destruction and all concluded that it was pro-Russian militants that destroyed the plane.Four men are on trial in the Netherlands for shooting down the plane. They are being tried in absentia because they cannot be extradited from Russia and they have declined to attend the trial.
