Hungary's COVID strategy seen shifting: further restrictions expected later this week

Despite the PM Orbán's long-standing resistance to any further Covid restrictions, there have been a number of official comments heard over the last three days, which hinted at upcoming further significant restrictions in response to the constantly deteriorating domestic Covid situation. Today, cabinet minister Gulyás said that a cabinet meeting is going to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, to decide on additional measures or the tightening of existing ones. Also today Katalin Novák, minister for family affairs told a meeting of the Council of the Elderly, a consultative body that the government occasionally talks to, that further measures are about to come and the government wishes to hear advice on those. Earlier, the country's chief medical officer hinted that there may come a time when a significant tightening of the existing Covid regime becomes necessary.At this moment, there is no information in the public domain on what exactly the new measures might be. Mr. Gulyás only said that keeping schools open is very important, which suggests that the government also wants to keep parents at work. Anyway, with any further tightening of Covid rules, Hungary would follow the predominant European trend.Of course, more Covid restrictions would likely imply a weaker economy, looser fiscal and monetary policy and a weaker forint.
