Hungary will block talks on Ukrainian EU membership

On November 30 the Hungarian Prime Minister's office stated that it would be wrong to open such talks while Ukraine is engaged in a full-scale war. Hungary is a neighbor of Ukraine. There is an indigenous Hungarian minority in Ukraine. Hungary is more pro-Russian than most EU states and has secured exemptions from sanctions on Russian oil and gas. EU leaders are due to meet on December 14 2023. Ukrainian EU membership had been on the agenda. All 27 EU member states would need to approve Ukraine if it is to become a member. Slovakia is also openly skeptical about Ukraine. If membership talks begin it would still be at least several years before Ukraine is admitted as a full member of the European Union.
