Iceland closes its Moscow embassy and Romania expels Russia diplomats

On June 10 Russia said it will react to Iceland's suspending the operation of its embassy in Russia. The Foreign Ministry said Iceland's act was anti-Russian. Iceland has announced that it will limit the activities of the Russian Embassy in Iceland. The two states still have diplomatic relations. On June 9 Romania said that Russia will be allowed to have only 40 diplomats in Romania from now on. This limits Russia to the same number of diplomats that Romania has in Moscow. This means most of the Russian diplomats in Romania must leave. The US Embassy in Moscow now has under 100 staff. In 2017 it had over 1,000. In 2022 Russia renamed the address of the embassy "Donetsk People's Republic Square", which is a reference to a region of Ukraine that Russia absorbed. Germany closed 4 of its 5 consulates in Russia in May 2023. In April 2023 Russia summoned the ambassadors of the US, Canada and the UK because they had allegedly interfered in the trial of Vladimir Kara-Murza. The dissident was sentenced to 25 years in prison for political activity. He is a dual Russian-British national. So far no one seems to be considering cutting off diplomatic relations.
