Improvement in Bolsonaro’s popularity does not reduce economic pessimism
Despite President Jair Bolsonaro’s popularity having reached its highest levels since the beginning on his term – the Datafolha and XP/Ipespe polls pointed out that the government’s great/good ratings reached 37% – there is pessimism in public opinion regarding the future of the economy. According to the figures presented by Datafolha today, most Brazilians believe that the country’s economic situation will worsen in the coming months, with rising unemployment, rising inflation, and loss of purchasing power. This pessimism is at its highest rates since the beginning of Bolsonaro’s government.
It is important to note that pessimism in relation to the economy is higher among the segments most affected by the loss of income caused by the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, which are the sectors that are the main beneficiaries of emergency aid. Datafolha’s figures on the perception of the economy reinforce the need to extend emergency aid for Bolsonaro to maintain and consolidate his current popularity ratings.
