India buys Russian warplanes

On July 2 India announced it is buying 33 Russian-made fighters and is paying for upgrades to 59 Russian-made jets that it already owns. This contract is worth over USD 2.4 billion. The planes are MiGs 29s. 12 Su 30 MKI Russian designed planes will be built in India by agreement with Russia. India is trying to become self-sufficient for armaments but has a long way to go. Prime Minister Modi announced that he had called Putin to congratulate him on the referendum result. Modi is one of the few democratic leaders to do so. India and Russia have a cordial relationship dating back to the Cold War. Russia and India have never sparred. An Indo-Russian Summit is being discussed for later in 2020. India is Russia's biggest arms export market. India spent USD 71 billion on arms in 2019.India's relationship with China turned tense after a border skirmish on June 15 that killed 20 Indians and an unknown number of Chinese troops. China will not be happy about the weapons sale to India. However, Russia's relationship with China is sometimes fractious behind the scenes. A few Chinese spies are caught in Russia each year and discretely expelled.
