International Olympic Committee is restricting Russia

On February the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rejected Russia's suggestions that Russian and Belarusian athletes should be allowed to compete under their own flags. This relates to the Paris 2024 Olympics. Russia said politics should not interfere with sport. In December 2022 the ICO unanimously agreed that there would be sanctions on Russia and Belarus and said they will not be allowed their flags or anthems or any other identification. The IOC is examining how to let Russian and Belarusians athletes take part. They might have to compete under a neutral flag as as has happened before.  Ukraine says that Russia ought to be prohibited from competing. It said that if the IOC allows Russia to take part even under the Olympic flag it is promoting war. If the IOC lets Russia take part then Ukraine said it shall not take part. Ukraine noted that most Russian Olympic medalists belong to the Central Army Sports Club. This shows that the Russian Olympic team is linked to militarism - Kyiv said. The Olympics are very important for Russian prestige. It is one of the few fora in which it sometimes beats the USA.  Latvia has called for Russia to be banned from the Olympics. The Asian Games will allow Russia and Belarus to participate.
