Japan angry at Russian missiles in Kuril Islands

On December 2 Tokyo denounced the stationing of S-300 surface to air missiles on islands claimed by Japan but owned by Russia. Moscow announced that the air defense system was on the island on Iturup.Japan lost the islands to the USSR in 1945. Tokyo has always spoken out against Russian military exercises in the Kuril Islands which Japan calls the Northern Territories.S 300 missiles are on a mobile launcher and were invented in the 1970s. They can detect and destroy other missiles and aircraft. An S-300 has a range of 150 km. Washington DC says that Russian is likely to intensify military activity close to Japan. The new Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga is unfriendly towards Russia. His predecessor was more sympathetic to Moscow. Russia missed an opportunity to definively improve relations with Japan under him. Russia and Japan still do not have a peace treaty ending the Second World War. The Kuril Islands is the sticking point. The Russian Constitution forbids ceding a single centimeter.
