Japan says its islands are illegally occupied by Russia

On April 22 Tokyo made the first such statement since the 1990s. The Kuril Islands belong to Russia but Japan calls them its Northern Territories. Japan has avoided using diplomatic language on the islands for over 20 years because relations with Russia were good. The USSR took the islands in 1945 when Japan was defeated.Japan and Russia have still not signed a post World War II treaty. There had been negotiations towards this in recent years. But Japan has taken a resolutely pro-Western line on Ukraine.Japan has introduced sanctions on Russia due to Ukraine. Russia said in March 2022 that it could not continue talks with Japan because of the unfriendly attitude of Tokyo.Japan is also worried about China's assertiveness in the Pacific Ocean. Japan is a formal military ally of the US and hosts US military bases.
