Justice Cristiano Zanin of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) rejected a request filed by Congressman Rodrigo Rollemberg (PSB-DF) seeking to compel the creation of a Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate alleged irregularities involving Banco Master and Banco de Brasília (BRB). Despite Zanin’s decision, pressure on Lower House President Hugo Motta and also on Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) to establish the CPI is expected to continue. Next week, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad is expected to step down from the post. His replacement will be the ministry’s executive secretary, Dario Durigan. Haddad is expected to run for governor of the state of São Paulo. Amid concerns over rising fuel prices, the federal government announced a reduction in taxes on diesel fuel and an increase in the export tax on crude oil. The measure is intended to help contain rising fuel costs in the country.
