Kazakh Constitution to be amended

On June 6 it was announced that a referendum approved a package of reforms to the constitution. 77% of votes were for the changes. There was a reported turnout of 68%. Experts suggest the high turnout may not be credible. The referendum was on over 50 amendments to the constitution – a large number for much of the population to digest. 

Observers from other Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) countries and Azerbaijan verified the probity of the election. Some independent observers said that ballot boxes were stuffed before they arrived in polling stations. The media was given very little chance to monitor the conduct of the poll. The result was never in doubt. In Kazakhstan, the government tends to get what it wants.

Among the reforms, former President Nursultan Nazarbayev is being stripped of his privileges. He has lost the title Leader of the Nation. The 81-year-old former president is powerless.
