Kazakhstan and Russia affirm their friendship

On November 28 Putin met the Kazakh President in Moscow. President Tokayev signed an agreement. Tokayev has just been re-elected to serve a 7 year term. He is constitutionally barred from seeking another term after this one. This is his first visit since the election and that in itself is telling. Tokayev underscored how vital Russian amity is. Russia is Kazakhstan's biggest trade partner after China. There is a Russian Kazakh trade forum currently ongoing. Tokayev said that CSTO military alliance of which Russia and Kazakhstan are members is supposed to be about ensuring peace. He called for Ukraine and Russia to resolve their differences peaceably. Some Russians felt it was a veiled criticism. Kazakhstan has been jittery about Russian expansionist rhetoric towards Kazakhstan.
