Kazakhstan bans sales of dual use goods to Russia

On October 19 Astana announced that 106 items can no longer be exported to Russia. Western countries had repeatedly accused Kazakhstan of knowingly selling goods to Russia that had a military application. Russia found it easy to get around sanctions. The items now forbidden for sale to Russia include certain electronic items, microchips, machine parts and drones. These items are almost all Western-made. Kazakh companies were then reselling them on to Russian entities. Some Kazakh companies were registered in 2022 after the Ukraine War began and resold such items to Russia. This suggests they were founded for the purpose of circumventing sanctions. Germany pressed Kazakhstan in September 2023 to close down loopholes that enabled Russia to attain sanctioned goods. Kazakhstan has long proclaimed that it is abiding by sanctions. Kazakhstan has not sanctioned Russia. However, it said that it will not break foreign sanctions on Russia.
