Kazakhstan passed law on media

On June 20 the president signed the law that allows people 3 years after the publication of an item in which to file a lawsuit. Anything disrespectful will be subject to legal proceedings. All internet resources are now designated media outlets and therefore subject to the law. The rules around registering media outlets have been strengthened. The % of content that must be broadcast in Kazakh must rise from 50% to 60% by 2027. This is part of a Kazakhization drive that has been going on for 10 years. As recently as 2015 there were many middled aged ethnic Kazakhs who spoke only Russian. Government and business were largely conducted in Russian. The Russian language still has co-official status. The purpose of the law is supposedly to protect society from immorality and harm to national culture. Journalists say the law will make it harder to conduct their work. Kazakhstan is rated 134 out of 142 in terms of media freedom.
