Kazakhstan shall observe sanctions on Russia

On June 16 the President of Kazakhstan said on Russian TV that his country will abide by international sanctions on Russia. He stressed that his country is still cooperating with Moscow but Kazakhstan cannot violate sanctions because it would suffer secondary sanctions if it did. He stated that Western countries had warned Kazakhstan not to break sanctions. Kazakhstan is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Eurasian Economic Union. These are both Russian dominated. Many in Russia are disappointed that the former Soviet state had been neutral on the Ukraine issue. The CSTO sent troops to help Kazakhstan cope with mass unrest in January 2022. But Kazakhstan is not helping Russia even indirectly. 20% of Kazakh citizens are ethnic Russians. On the northern border ethnic Russians are the majority in some towns. Some Russian politicians have publicly doubted the legitimacy of Kazakhstan as an independent country. Some Kazakhs are alarmed that if Russia succeeds in Ukraine it may one day claim some Kazakh territory.
