Kazan Forum opens

On May 18 the economic forum opened for its 14th year. 15,000 people have registered to come and they belong to 85 countries. That is fewer than before. Kazan is the capital of the Tatarstan Republic. It is the homeland of an indigenous Muslim ethnic minority, the Tatars. The forum is its Muslim aspect. Russia is seeking to forge links with the Islamic world and win investment. Russia has cordial relations with Islamic countries in the former USSR, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia Egypt, Pakistan, Syria, Eritrea and Sudan. Anti-Western rhetoric plays well in much of the world. The head of Russia's Muslims is due to address the forum. The Kazan Forum now has a federal level but Putin is not attending. Iran, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, the UAE, Turkey and Malaysia are all sending large delegations. Kazan is due to host the BRICS Summit in 2024. However, there might not be enough hotels.
