On June 9 former Prime Minister Sapar Isakov was convicted of misusing public funds and sentenced to 18 years in jail. The money was intended for museum and horse race course. Isakov was already incarcerated for the other financial crimes and mishandling the two cases that he is now convicted of. He has also been fined USD 3.3 million. Isakov was not in court for his sentencing saying he refused to participate in a sham.In 2019 another former PM was convicted on similar charges. A number of notable corruption trials have resulted in lengthy jail sentences for confidantes of former president Atambaev. President Jeenbekov initiated this anti-corruption drive. Jeenbekov was PM under Atambaev. Atambaev is facing corruption charges. Jeenbekov's foes accuse him of abusing the judicial system to purge his opponents.
