Latvia's former interior ministry convicted of spying for Russia

On November 10 the court found that Janis Adamsons has worked for the Russian Federal Security Service and gathered intelligence for decades. He was awarded 8 years in jail. A Russian citizen was his accomplice, and a former KGB officer was given 7 years. Adamsons was interior minister in the mid 1990s. He remained in parliament until 2021. He was also deputy head of the navy and served as acting head of border security. The prosecution argued that Adamson's actuation was ideological. He was an adult when the USSR was dissolved and genuinely believed that Latvia should be united with Russia. Latvia borders Russia and has a significant minority who are ethnic Russians. Latvia is worried that should Russia succeed in Ukraine it may say it must liberate Russians in Latvia. But Latvia is a NATO country.
