Latvia shuts Russian TV channel

On December 6 Dozhd was closed down because it was allegedly threatens Latvian national security. The Latvian government cited several violations of the broadcasting rules by the Russian language channel. The last day on air will be December 8. The channel said that Crimea was Russian and the Russian Army was ''ours''. Despite firing an anchor who made the remarks, this was not enough to appease Latvia. In June 2022 Dozhd was taken off air in Russia for being too liberal. Yet it is still too Russian nationalist for Latvia. 25% of Latvia's residents are ethnic Russians. Some are Latvian citizens. Latvia is worried that Putin will try to annex them because they were once part of the Russian Empire. Dozhd has a TV studio in the Netherlands.
