Leading Russian newspaper loses license to print

On September 5 a court rescinded the Novaya Gazeta license to print. The newspaper still exists online. The chief editor of the paper, Dmitry Muratov, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2021. Muratov said that the ruling was political. The newspaper claimed to have been ''killed'' and noted that several of its journalists were killed in suspicious circumstances over the last 30 years. The communications authority said that the printing license was revoked due to the paper's failing to provide its editorial statute by the deadline. The newspaper suspended publication in March 2022 because of the censorship in relation to the war. Some Novaya Gazeta journalists have gone to Europe to publish the paper from there. The court's ruling came the day after the funeral of Mikhail Gorbachev. The former Soviet leader was a donor to the newspaper. Some have said that the timing was significant.
