With an emphasis on addressing the health crisis, the economic reactivation and the fight against corruption, Luis Abinader Corona was sworn in today as the 67th president of the Dominican Republic. He offers unlimited dialogue and work to promote the urgent changes to get out of the current crisis and solve structural problems. President Abinader announced the development of a plan to relaunch tourism and public-private partnerships for infrastructure project, financing for SMEs and agriculture, and the restructuring of public institutions.On the social sphere he announced the establishment of universal and free health insurance, universal access to the Covid vaccine when it is available; maintenance of temporary social assistance programs; and virtual public education during the pandemic. He acknowledged that the circumstances force greater internal and external public indebtedness, beyond what was programmed before the pandemic, and that fiscal consolidation will remain a pending issue once the pandemic is overcome. Fulfilling his promise, the first administrative act of President Abinader was the appointment of Miriam German as Attorney General and Yeni Berenice Reynoso as Deputy Attorney, both recommended by civil society, with the task of acting independently from the Executive branch, on the fight against impunity in accordance with the laws. During the morning, President Abinader stated that whoever has stolen public resources, must answer to justice.
