On November 15 large protests demanded that Lukashenka resign. The scale of the protests surprised the government. It had been assumed that the opposition was running out of steam. Police responded with a heavy hand. Over 1 000 people were arrested. Tear gas and stun grenades were used. The internet was closed down to stop protesters coordinating and several metro stations in Minsk were shut.In the 3 months since a disputed presidential election protests have never ceased.
