Mixed feelings towards Belarus in the EU

On May 29 the Hungarian Foreign Minister visited Belarus. This is the first visit by the foreign minister of an EU country for several years. The Hungarian Government is the most sympathetic to Russia and Belarus of all the EU governments. Minsk and Budapest signed an agreement on cooperation on nuclear power and disposing of radioactive waste. Russia is helping Hungary build a nuclear power station. Hungary's overtures to Belarus have been greeted with disapproval by most of the EU.Hungary said it wants to reduce sanctions and enhance collaboration. Belarus is a military ally of Russia and allowed Russia to use Belarusian soil to invade Ukraine. However, Belarus has not sent troops against Ukraine.On May 29 Poland announced that it is bringing back the 200 meter buffer zone on the frontier with Belarus. Poland accused Belarus of encouraging people from the Middle East to travel to Belarus and then cross illegally into Poland. Poland is one of the foremost supporters of Ukraine.
