Moldova adopts pro-Western defense strategy

On December 15 the Parliament voted to make the change. Moldova has officially been neutral until now. The former Soviet republic still does not seek to join NATO. The Moldovan government aspires to join the EU. The Harvard-educated president is an outspoken advocate of Ukraine's cause, too. However, there is a vociferously pro-Moscow minority in Moldova. Transnistria is a breakaway region of Moldova that has been Russian-occupied since 1991. There are 1,000 Russian troops there. Moscow says they are peacekeepers. On December 17 Moldova began military drills near Transnistria.
