Moldova and Russia makes gas deal

On October 29 Gazprom signed a deal with Moldova. It extends the current contract. Moldova had declared a state of emergency after Gazprom raised prices. Moldovia is a former Soviet country. It made its first ever gas deal with a country other than Russia in a desperate bid to secure affordable energy. Moldova was buying gas from Poland. Gazprom had raised the price sharply and reduce the amount of has sold to Moldova. Gazprom said this was due to late payment and non-payment by Moldova.The deal takes effect on November 1 2021 and lasts for 5 years. A price formula has been agreed. They have also agreed on paying Moldova's debt for gas.Moldova's deputy prime minister was involved in the talks as was the CEO of Gazprom Alexei Miller.Some in Moldova favor a close relationship with Russia. Others want to join the EU. The official languages are Romanian and Russian. The president and prime minister are both pro-EU. Moscow said the price row was unrelated to politics. Others suspect that Moldova was being punished for its westward turn. Europe is facing an energy crisis as Russia is not supplying as much gas before. Moreover, prices are up. Gas storage is down due to an unusually long and cold winter in early 2021. The EU said that Russia was refusing to sell sufficient gas as a political weapon. Nord Stream 2 is the pipeline from Russia to Germany. It is ready to start pumping as soon as Germany signs off on its safety.
