Moldova may lose EU aid

Last week the European Parliament voted to scrap financial support to Moldova. However, the decision is not final. The EU suspects that Moldovan politicians and bureaucrats 'disappeared' USD 1 Billion in 2015. The EU thinks that Moldova is not going anything serious about embezzlement and tax evasion by Moldovans and foreigners. Moldova is reliant on EU money to balance the budget. A million Moldovans are working in the EU. The country is by many measures the poorest country in Europe and is currently trying to secure EU membership. Parliamentary elections are due in February 2019. The Democratic Party is pro-EU and the Socialist Party is pro-Russian. In fact the two are a duopoly. They face a spirited challenge from populist candidates on an anti-corruption platform. The government is increasing pensions in an effort to stave off the political insurgency. However, this pension hike is unaffordable without EU money. Moldova is a greying country since so many youngsters are working abroad and it has one of the lowest birthrates in the world.
