Moldova moving away from Russia

On October 17 Canada sanctioned 9 Russian people and 6 Russian TV channels that it said had been trying to undermine Moldova's independence and democracy. The people sanctioned are allegedly connected to a Moldovan oligarch, Vlad Plahotniuc. He used to lead the Democratic Party and allegedly disappeared USD 1 billion. Ilan Shor has also been sanctioned. He is in Israel and is suspected of trying to destabilize the Moldovan government. He is openly pro-Moscow. His party was called the Shor Party and has now been banned. The sanctioned people include Shor Party politicians. The sanctioned individuals and entities are not allowed to trade with Canada, and their assets in Canada have been frozen. The US sanctioned Plahotniuc and Shor in June 2023. Alexandr Kalinin has been sanctioned. He is a Moldovan politician. He has been to Russian-controlled regions in Ukraine. He has been charged with crime in Moldova; advocating for the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The sanctioned TV stations are alleged to have disseminated pro-Moscow propaganda. Plahotniuc is suspected to be in Cyprus but his whereabouts are uncertain. Since 2020 there have been many protests in Moldova calling for President Sandu to resign. Maia Sandu is outspokenly pro-Western and US educated. In 2022 Moldova was given EU candidate member status. On October 16 Sandu said that Moldova has diversified its gas supply and Russia cannot blackmail Moldova again. Moldova bought its gas from Gazprom, which is Russian. From now on Moldova will buy gas from elsewhere. In 2022 Gazprom breached its contract and significantly cut gas deliveries to Moldova.
