Moldovan Court blocks loan from Russia

On May 7 the Moldovan Constitutional Court ruled that a USD 216 m loan from Russia is against the constitution. The decision cannot be appealed. The loan was a lifeline for Moldova which is the poorest country in Europe. The 10 year loan would help to reduce the deficit which is ballooning alarmingly. Opposition politicians welcomed the court's decision. They said the loan would have been spent on needless projects to be carried out by Russian companies. Moldova is a former USSR country and Russian is one of the its official languages.President Igor Dodon is incensed by the court's ruling. He is pro-Russian. Dodon said the state will have to slash all budgets including healthcare as a result of the court ruling. His foes said that Russia granted the loan to boost Dodon's chances of re-election.
