More problems in Hong Kong

A number of events have raised the level of concern among local residents about the future of Hong Kong. These include the arrest of media enterpreneur Jimmy Lai and of former leglisator and pro-democracy activist Martin Lee, the imposition of nationalist curriculum in the lower schools, and the attempt to block liberal legislators from participating in the selection process for the chief executive. The latest incident against the city occurred through a statement by Xia Baolong, the head of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs office in Hong Kong, the senior mainland representative. He said that the city’s electoral system must undergo a fundamental revision to ensure only “patriots” hold key positions in all three branches of government – the executive, legislature and judiciary. With the new BNO passport offer from the UK, permitting certain Hong Kong residents to be eligible for UK permanent residency, locals and expatriates are now asking who is likely to leave and what it means for the future of the city. The underlying political forces at work make the answer more complex than it may appear.
