Politics: Morena consolidates congressional majority in push to rush through sweeping reforms in first days of new Congress
Late last week, the Federal Electoral Tribunal signed off on the composition of chambers of Congress previously approved by the INE, sealing a qualified majority for Morena and its allies in the Chamber of Deputies with 72.8% of the lower chamber’s seats. Although the incumbent camp was left three seats short of a qualified Senate majority, it has already convinced two PRD senators to jump ship.
That set the stage for outgoing President López Obrador’s push to rush through his Plan C reform package with 3 of the 4 most important ones on the list to be approved as soon as the session begins: the judicial reform, the elimination of autonomous bodies and the militarization of public security by formally putting the National Guard under the Ministry of National Defense.
