In a context of an increase in the number of positive cases of the new coronavirus, declaration of the State of Emergency, imposition of the curfew and increasing economic paralysis, the Central Electoral Board has published the result of the municipal elections. These confirm victory for the opposition (PRM and allies). The PRM and its allies grabbed 91 municipalities or 54% of the total (up from 50 won in last elections in 2016), the PLD and its allies 56 or 33% (down from 106) and the rest of the parties 21 (13%). Municipalities are the largest and most important municipal units. The PRM and allies grabbed 103 municipal districts (44%), the PLD and allies 101 (43%) and the rest of the parties 31 (13%). Municipal districts are smaller, less populated municipal entities. The Central Electoral Board is yet to provide aggregated data at the national level of the total votes obtained by the candidates of each party and coalition. However, it is evident that the PRM and allies obtained over 50% of the votes. We expect to provide more details in our next report.
